Decisions at the Edge: A NEW workshop on performance under pressure

Posted on 26th March 2026

What can mountaineering teach us when the stakes are high?

In environments where the margin for error is small, decisions can carry real-life consequences. Success often depends on more than technical knowledge alone. It relies on the human skills that shape awareness, risk anticipation and composure.

A new workshop from the Occupational Psychology Centre (OPC), in collaboration with renowned mountaineer and expedition leader Squash Falconer, brings these capabilties to life through a unique and compelling mountaineering perspective.

Decisions at the Edge is a dynamic, interactive one-day workshop focused on some critical Non-Technical Skills that underpin safe and effective performance in high-risk, high-pressure environments.

Workshop Details

Location: Leonardo Hotel, Watford
Date: Tuesday 12th May 2026. 9:30am – 4:00pm

Bringing together decades of applied psychology with real-world mountaineering experience from extreme environments, the workshop explores how people think, respond and make decisions when conditions are uncertain and the stakes are high.

Through expert input, real-life case studies and interactive discussion, delegates will gain practical insight into how these skills show up in everyday operational settings — and how they can be strengthened in their own roles and teams.

  • How these skills support safe and effective decision-making
