Description
What does it measure?
The TRP is designed to assess a candidate’s potential to be successful through training, in other words to assess their trainability. The TRP assesses this in 2 parts:
- Part 1 (TRP1) assesses the candidate’s ability to retain and recall job related information.
- Part 2 (TRP2) assesses the candidate’s ability to learn new procedures and regulations.

Who should it be used for?
The TRP is suitable for any job role (both safety-critical and non-safety-critical roles) where employees are required to undergo some form of training. It will help you to identify those candidates who are most likely to be successful in training therefore saving you both time and money.
Why should I use it?
Organisations often spend endless hours and thousands of pounds training new and existing employees. With the use of the TRP, you can ensure that your time and money is well spent as you can invest in those individuals who are most likely to succeed at training.
The TRP is a quick and easy test to administer and even quicker and easier to score, with the simple use of a scoring key.
What does TRP1 involve?
In TRP1 candidates listen to a recording of fictitious safety-related rules information. They learn the information and then answer from memory, 18 questions based on the information they have just heard and read.
Supporting Evidence
Five validation studies have been undertaken and provide strong support for the TRP's ability to predict training performance, training outcomes, job performance and even safety performance.
A recent validation study undertaken with a sample of trainee train drivers at a UK rail organisation found the TRP predicted overall training success. Those trainees who were successful through driver training had performed better on the TRP at selection. Another validation study, again involving trainee train drivers, found the TRP to be correlated with training performance. Trainees who performed well on the TRP were those trainees who were performing well in training. A validation study undertaken with train drivers, found the TRP to be correlated with trainer’s ratings on a range of training measures. Train drivers who performed well on the TRP, had received higher trainer ratings on measures such as ability to learn rules and the ability to learn new information in training.
